What is Raja Sankaranti /Raja Festival ?

Raja Sankaranti Or Mithun Sanaranti is a Four Days Festival is Mostly Celibrated in East Odisha.The first Day is Called “Pahili Raja“,the Second Day is Called “Mithun Sankaranti (Raja Sankaranti)” , Third Day is Called “Bhu Daaha (Basi Raja)” and the Final/Fourth Day is Called “Bashumati Snana“.

Why We Celibrate Raja ? | Mythology of Raja Sankaranti ?

“Rāja” (Raja) word is a Sanskrit word coming from “Rajas” meaning “Ritsurab” or “Menstruation”. When a woman has a Menstruation, she is called ‘Rajaswala’ or “Menstruating woman”. According to the Mythology, when Bhagaban Bishnu’s Wife / Mother of Earth suffers a lot of agony for the first 3 days when he was Menstruating for the first time; and on the third day, this pain is lessened and she takes a Bath. Thatswhy in the medieval period, women are not given to do work in these 3 days. Those three days of Bhumata are now followed/Celebrated as a holiday. Lord Jagannath’s wife’s name is Basmati, hence her bath on the fourth day is called “Basumati Snana“.

On the final and fourth day, Vasumati Snana, women bathe the grinding stone as a symbol of Bhumi, Hindu goddess of the earth, with turmeric paste and adore with flowers. All types of seasonal fruits are offered to mother Bhumi.

How the Girls Celibrated Raja ?

The day before the festival is called Sajabaja or preparatory day during which the house, kitchen including the grinding stones are cleaned and spices are ground for three days.

In the three days, women are given a break from household work and time to play indoor games. No farming takes place and everyone abstains from walking barefoot on the earth. This is to prepare the earth for the coming rain.Unmarried girls will dress in new clothes or wear traditional Saree and Alata (red dye) on their feet.

Indoor and outdoor games are a popular pursuit during Raja.Girls will play on swings tied on tree branches while singing folk songs. There are various types of swings, each with a name such as ‘Ram Doli‘, ‘Charki Doli‘, ‘Pata Doli‘ and ‘Dandi Doli‘.
